He grew up on the family farm in Menard County near Fancy Prairie. He attended Cathedral Boys High School for two years and graduated from Athens Community High School and attended Notre Dame University.
Phil served in the military from March 1941 to October 1945. He was with the Second Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations going ashore on Normandy Beachhead on D-Day plus 2, and participated with that Division in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded two Service Ribbons, one Silver Battle Star and a Bronze Star Medal.
His professional career was spent mostly in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning industry. He retired from Booth & Thomas Inc. as Executive Vice President.
He was a member of Christ the King Parish, the Holy Name Society and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #755.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; three daughters, Karen (Daniel) Fetgatter of Pontiac, Carole Long of Chicago and Monica Griffith of Sacramento, CA; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lori Smith; five sisters and five brothers.
Visitation: 3:00-5:00 PM, Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 3:00 PM.
Funeral Mass: 11:00 AM, Monday, December 10, 2012, at Christ the King Church with Reverend Joseph G. Ring officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Detail will conduct Military Honors.
