Kathryn Maloney Adkins was born in Illinois in 1906, one of seven children of Walter Scott and Matilda Kuhn Maloney. She and William Scott Adkins were married at the First Methodist Church in Murphysboro on July 11, 1947.

She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1923, and received a B.S. in Ed. degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in Aug. 1948.

Mrs. Adkins began her teaching career in Murphysboro at Longfellow School in 1927. She began teaching a sight-saving class at Lincoln School in 1946. She remained in the Murphysboro school system until her retirement, at which time she became a substitute teacher for the district.

Kathryn Adkins belonged to the First Methodist Church and was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and Delta Theta Tau sorority.
