U.S. Senator and Medal of Honor recipient. Daniel K. Inouye was Hawaii's longest serving U.S. senator and the senior member of the U.S. Senate at the time of his death. During World War II he served with the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team, with whom he earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and numerous other commendations. In 2000, Inouye was awarded the Medal of Honor by then-President Bill Clinton for his heroism in Italy during World War II. In 1954, he was elected to the legislature of the Territory of Hawaii, five years before the Hawaiian Islands became the fiftieth state admitted to the Union. On August 21, 1959, the day Hawaii became a state, Inouye was elected as Hawaii's first U.S. Congressman. In 1963, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until his death.
