William was an engineer and ran a traction engine and a threshing machine. He married Martha Sabria Curtis in 1867. At about the age of 21, he and his bride Martha headed to California by wagon train (no trails) and settled first in Colusa County where their first son was born. WH spent time lumbering and ran a saloon.
WH had his own log brand for marking log ends. After floating down the river, they would be reclaimed and sold. WH and Martha later moved to the Long Beach area (Bixby Ranch) and farmed in the area. They also farmed in the Downey area. He and Martha had 8 children.
