William was the husband of Lillian (Tyler) McVay (1867-1949). They were married on December 1, 1886 in Hazel Green, Delaware County, Iowa and had seven children together including: Carl, Blanche, Eulaila, Helene, Frank and Donald McVay and an infant who died in 1890. William was the son of Robert McVay and Angeline (Hardesty) McVay. William's father died when he was 8 years old and his mother never remarried. William moved from Iowa to Nebraska to Colorado where he was a gold miner.

Obituary from the Grand Island Independent, Grand Island, Nebraska, Friday, June 25, 1926:

"William McVay, a former Grand Island resident, died at his home in Osgood, Colo., on June 23. He was aged about 74 years. The body was brought to this city for burial, arriving at noon Friday. Funeral services were held at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the O'Loughlin-Livingston funeral parlors, in charge of Mrs. W. J. Read, of the Christian Science church. Burial was in the Grand Island cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, two daughters, one son, and a brother, Hugh McVay, of this city. Some 25 years ago, he left here for Colorado and has since resided there."
