As a boy he worked on his father's farm - the Brantford Nursery - at lot 28 in the second Concession.
In Feb 1881 aged 28 he inherited part of his uncle William's farm, the north three-quarters (150 acres) of Lot 23 in the second Concession, Brantford Township (as well as his 13-acre woodlot which was in the south part of lot 27, Concession I) but according to the provisions of his uncle's will was not able to take possession of it until after the death (in 1887) of the survivor of his aunts Martha Randall and Sarah Walkinshaw.
He married Elizabeth Margaret McVicar (c.1860-1884), the daughter of his neighbour, in 1882.
In 1883 he was elected deputy Reeve of the township of Brantford.
His wife Elizabeth died shortly after the birth of their son Harold, and James leased his farm in Oct 1884 and he and Harold went to live with his parents at the Brantford Nursery. His father retired about 1887 and moved to Brantford to live in a new house he had built at 506 Colborne Street, and James lived there with his parents for several years.
In 1908 he married Gertrude Sarah Moody (1881-1925) of St. Thomas, Ontario. They initially lived on Drummond Street in Brantford, but later moved out to James' farm in Brantford Township.
He was treasurer and clerk of the township of Brantford.
