James Nathan's two brothers, John and Reuben enlisted in the 42nd Regiment Georgia Infantry, Company G "Walton Blues on March 4, 1862. John was discharged February 1863, returned to service and died at the battle of Vicksburg in 1863.

Reuben was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and died of chronic diarrhea on July 21, 1863 in the St. Louis U.S.A. General Hospital in New Orleans. Records show that he was buried at Cypress Grove Cemetery (#2) in New Orleans. This cemetery is no longer in existence. It was located at the foot of Canal Blvd. next to the present Greenwood Cemetery
