Born in Clarks Summit, he was the son of the late Clarence and Anna Frengel Carlton.
He resided in the Canadensis area since 1983 and prior to that in Upper Montclair, N.J.
He was an orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Army and retired in 1967 after 24½ years of service.
He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam, and commanded a Field Hospital Unit when he retired.
A graduate of Penn State College, he attended medical school at Dartmouth College, Boston College and Amherst College.
After his retirement from the military, he was associated with the research department of Hoffman LaRoche Pharmaceutical Company in New Jersey, until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the Canadensis United Methodist, Phillips Zacharias Phillips Post 859 American Legion in Newfoundland. He operated a tree farm in Greene Township and raised exotic breeds of chickens at the Beech.
He is survived by two sons, Michael R. Carlton of Merrimack, N.H., and Jeffrey A. Carlton of Canadensis; four grandchildren, Tina C. Ranney, Amy. B. Carlton, Jerri L. Carlton and Wendy J. Carlton; great-grandchildren, Dana and Dylan Raney; and two sisters, Dorothy Rubrecht of Newfoundland and Rhea Hoover of Trenton, N.J.
He was preceded in death by a son, John; daughters, Patricia and Kristin; a grandson, David; and a brother, Ralph.
