Martins Ferry
Thursday evening Zachariah Burris, the oldest citizen of this place, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Devault, in the Fifth ward. Death was due from the infirmities caused by old age. The deceased was born in 1805, in the State of Maryland, and in 1823 came to Ohio and made his home near St. Clairsville. Later on he moved to this place, when there was not enough people residing here to call it even a settlement, and has made this his home ever since. Two years of his life was served in the Mexican war. He leaves six children to mourn his death. They are Mrs. Geo. Devault, Theodore and John Burris, of this place, Brown Burris, of Creston, Iowa, Eugene Burris, of Montana, and Henry Burris, of Freeport, O. The funeral services will take place Sunday afternoon from his late home. Interment will be made at Riverview cemetery.
