Name note: When Charles' French grandfather, "Paul Joseph Guerard de Nancrede" became a naturalized citizen, his name was shortened to "Joseph Guerard Nancrede". Consequently, Charles was born "Nancrede", not "de Nancrede". However, in 1906, after his children reached maturity and for sentimental reasons, he petitioned for a name change. (Many biographies state that the reason was certain legal complications concerning family property in France)

NANCRÈDE, Charles Beylard Guerard de, physician, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 30, 1847, son of Thomas Dixie [ey] and Mary Elizabeth (Hull) Nancrede and descendant of Paul Joseph Guerard de Nancrede, who as an officer in the French army came to America with Count Rochambeau, was wounded at the siege of Yorktown, and thanked by Gen. Washington for services he rendered. Charles attended private school in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated from the medical department in 1869. In 1883, he graduated at Jefferson Medical College, served one year as an intern at the Protestant Episcopal hospital (Philadelphia), and commenced the practices of medicine there in 1870. ... He was the first surgeon in Philadelphia to operate for gunshot wounds of the intestines; author of many books, papers, and articles; veteran of the war with Spain (1898), serving as the chief surgeon of the 3rd division, 2nd army corps; with the 5th army corps in the Santiago campaign, and was recommended for brevet lieutenant colonel for attending the wounded under fire at the battle of Santiago. ... He held many many posts in Philadelphia and Ann Arbor Michigan; was a member of many professional organizations and societies; and received numerous awards. ... Dr. de Nancrede was married June 3, 1872 to Alice, daughter of Francis P. Dunnington of Baltimore, fathering one son and four daughters that survived childhood.
