DEATH OF MAJOR J.T. HOYT.
Major James T. Hoyt, a well-known citizen of this city, died suddenly yesterday at his residence.
He was born in the city of Rochester, New York State, in the year 1828. His parents moved to Illinois while he was young, and he studied law and was admitted to practice before attaining his majority by a special Act of
the Legislature. He came to this state in 1851, and settled In Tuolumne County, which he represented In the Legislature of 1853–. He returned to Chicago and
resumed his profession, but in 1860 he came again to this State.
In 1863 he entered the service of the United States as Quartermaster and served under Generals Wright and McDowell until 1868-9. Since this time he has been engaged in the practice of his profession. As an officer he showed much executive ability; as a citizen he was patriotic and ready to assist in every good work;
as a lawyer he had a quick, versatile and comprehensive mind, and as a friend he was enthusiastic and liberal-minded.
He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. The funeral services will take place tomorrow at the First Universalist Church.
