The Drowning in Rockingham.
(Special Dispatch to The Times.)
CLOVER HILL., VA., June 18.— Mr. A.L. Hilbert and Miss Mary Revercomb, while returning from a lawn festival at Ottobine Church Saturday night, were both drowned in Beaver Creek, a small spring branch at ordinary times, but then a raging torrent. About 9 o'clock it began to rain and for about 4 hours such a rain fell as was unknown before. In a very short time all the streams were out of their banks. The night was terribly dark and these two, and many others doubtless, knew nothing of the condition of the stream.
Sunday morning the horse, still hitched to a wrecked buggy, was found in a meadow several hundred yards below the pond. The body of the girl was found to-day about one mile down the stream, caught by her hair. Miss Revercomb was only 17 years of age.
The body of the young man has not been found. His coat was found fastened to a snag with both sleeves turned with the inside out, about one half a mile below where the body of the girl was found. To-day a thorough and systematic search will be made.
