She was born in St. Charles to the late Ruben and Maggie Kelley Carter. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School and Sumter Area Technical College. She was a lifelong member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the senior missionary ministry. She retired from Sumter School District 17 after 38 years of service.
Hattie leaves to cherish precious memories: her husband of 48 years, Otis Butler Sr.; two sons, Otis Jr. (Deherda) Butler and DeMarcus Butler; a daughter, Jacqueline (Eddie) Brown; six sisters, Gladys Clark, Maggie (Isiah) White, Emma Ragins, Margie McCoy, Dorothy (Tommie) Turner and Earnestine (William) Singleton; two brothers, James Carter and Isaac (Edna) Carter; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a goddaughter, Cassandra (Greg) Rhodes; two special nieces, Geneva Wilson Hair and Betty Caesar (Willie) Conyers; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Al) Lawrence; four aunts; one uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Public viewing was held Friday at Job's Mortuary.
Sister Butler will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. today for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 S. Harvin St., Sumter, with Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by Pastor Ricky Simmons, Elder Wayne Brunson, Minister Eugene Winn and Pastor Irene Anthony. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family is receiving friends at the home, 113 Laurel St., Sumter.
