Joshua "Josh" Alex Thornton, 32, of the Scottsboro community, died on Dec. 10, 2012, at his home after a long illness.

Josh was born to Ronny and Ronda (Boyd) Thornton on April 24, 1980. He was a 1999 graduate of Cheatham County Central High School.

Josh was preceded in death by his brother, Jason Thornton; grandfathers, Fee Boyd and James Thornton; and grandmother, Betty Boyd.

Josh is survived by his parents; grandmother, Beatrice Thornton; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends; and his dog, General.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, from 4-8 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, from 10-11 a.m.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Bro. Bob Mowrey officiating. Music for the service was by Elmo Mercer and a solo was sung by George Osment Jr.

Burial followed at the Cowan Cemetery on Old Hickory Boulevard in the Scottsboro community. Pallbearers included cousins and friends. The honorary pallbearer was Josh's close friend and caregiver, William McCloud.

The family would like to express their appreciation, thanks and gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Meharry General Hospital for their care and concern during Josh's many stays.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in honor of Josh be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

The family entrusted Boyd Funeral Home with the arrangements.
