"Dr. Joseph Warren Waldo Marshall, son of Dr. Samuel Marshall and Eliza Clopton Marshall, was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina, October 27th, 1821. He spent his boyhood on Hard Labour Creek, Abbeville District, and attended the country school.

At the age of eighteen, he entered Due West College and was prepared for South Carolina College by Rev. John S. Pressley, where he was graduated in 1843. He then entered the Medical College in Charleston, South Carolina, there he took a course in Medicine and was graduated in 1846. He settled at White Hall, on Hard Labour Creek, in Abbeville District, where he had practiced for many years. He then moved to Abbeville Village, where he worked in his profession for the greater part of his life.

He married first Jane Amanda Smith, daughter of William Smith, Jr.; four children William, Fannie, Jennie, and Samuel, but only one, Fannie, married and had children.

Dr. Marshall married second Fannie Calhoun, six children:
1) Joseph Calhoun Marshall born November 3, 1863, married Marie Prevost in 1899. Their children: Virginia, Frances, Joseph, Marie, Waldo, and Prevost.
2) Kate Williams Marshall. Unmarried.
3) Sallie Marshall, born December 27, 1869. Married Frank DuPre. Their children, Fannie & Frank C. DuPre.
4) Elizabeth Marshall, born May 15, 1871. Married Samuel C. Cason. Their children, Joseph C. Cason, born July 14, 1890. Died July 3, 1914. Henry Cason, born August 26, 1892. Elizabeth Cason born February 18, 1895 Dead. Marion Cason born march 22, 1897.
5) Waldo Marshall. Born February 3, 1874. Died January 24, 1896. Unmarried.
6) John Foster Marshall. Born October 13, 1875. Died December 28, 1879.

Dr. Marshall died on January 6th, 1904 at the age of seventy-eight. His wife, Frances Calhoun Marshall, died on January 2nd, 1936, at the age of one hundred and four years." - From Marshall Family Notes preserved by Marie Marshall
