John Riley Calcote was born November 27, 1893 in Bowie, Montague County, Texas. He was the eldest child of W. S. and Ora Bell (Mayo) Calcote. By 1900 the Calcote family had moved to Cloud Chief in Oklahoma Territory and later to the Buffalo Community in Beckham County, Oklahoma. When John registered for the draft in 1917 he was living in Childress County, Texas. The WWI draft registration cards lists his description as short, medium build, brown eyes and dark brown hair. He was age 23, single, and a farmer.

John married Nora Jewel Young shortly after this. They had the following children: Ina Juanita, Alva Bynum, John Dell, Novella May, Roy Claude, Lorene Faye, Ruby Ellen, and Eugene Raymond.

Jewell preceded John in death (1968). John died in Amarillo, Texas on February 23, 1980.
