Stephen B. Todd passed away at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. B.T. Rice
at noon on Wednesday, May 20,
1902. He was 79 years, 7 months
and 27 days of age.
Mr. Todd was born in Westmoreland
county, Pennsylvania on September
23, 1823. He was married to Mary
A. Fleming on September 25, 1845.
To this union was born eight children
three sons and five daughters. Two
sons and three daughtes survive him
Mrs. Jane Trosper, Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma, Mrs. Laura Johnston and
Mrs. Ella Rice of Frankfort, Kansas.
Just after his marriage, Mr. Todd
enlisted and fought in the war with
Mexico. He came to Kansas in
1856, settling on a farm one and
one-half miles from Frankfort on
April 19, 1856.
He enlisted in Co. D. Eighth Kansas
Infantry as a private, and on Nov. 9,
1861 was commissioned as First
Lieutenant. He was mustered out
as a Captain on September 3, 1863
on account of a disability.
On October 11, 1879 he established
a newspaper, "The National Head-
light" which he sold two years later.
He moved to Frankfort in 1881 and
has resided here since.
In 1899 he suffered a paralytic
stroke, which rendered hin a
confined invalid.
Early in life he became a member of
the Presbyterian Church. He was a
prominent member of the G.A.R. and
Masonic Lodge. He was a master of
the lodge twice.
Funeral services were held at the
home of B.T. Rice on Thursday May
21 at 2:30 p.m. with the members of
the G.A.R. and the Masonic Lodge
in charge at graveside.
