Mary Ethel VanVliet, was born on January
8, 1881 at Grand View, Indiana and was the
daughter of Peter T. and Julia T. Huffman.
She was married to John H. Foote of Evans-
ville, Indiana on May 24, 1903. To this
union was born two daughters, Grace
Geraldine and Julia Harvey.
She was a charter member of the Christian
Science Church of Grand View, Indiana;
also a member of the Mother Church of
Christ Scientist of Boston, Mass.
She was a member of the Grand View
Chapter of the Ben Hur Lodge.
She was married to James B. VanVliet on
October 16, 1916, since which date she has
resided at Sunnybrook Farm, southwest of
Vliets, Kansas.
She was nationally known as one of the
leading dog and cat fanciers, specializing
in prize American Pit Bull-terrier dogs and
Persian cats. She was editor of the Persian
Gazette, a feature of Bloodlines edited at
Kalamazoo, Michigan.
She passed away on Sunday, June 30 at
2:30 p.m. at her home.
She is survived by her husband, James B.
VanVliet; two daughters, Mrs. Clifford
Peabody and Mrs. Hal Russell; one grand-
son, all of Emporia, Kansas; two brothers,
William B. Huffman and George W. Huff-
man; four sisters, Mrs. Lenora Riney, Mrs.
May Ella Ritter, Mrs. Madge Weekley and
Mrs. Hazel Sandefur, all of Evansville,
Indiana.
Burial was in the Frankfort Cemetery,
Frankfort, Kansas.
