KERRVILLE-
Alta Louise Powell Bridges, born July 30,1923, in Fredericksburg, Texas, to James S. Powell and Sophie Baethge, died Dec. 12, 2012, in a local care center.
Alta graduated from Fredericksburg High School with the class of 1941. She married Thomas E. "Tom" Bridges in Kerrville on Oct. 20, 1956.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas E. "Tom" Bridges in 1988; brother, Harry A. Powell in 2004; son-in-law, John R. "Jack" Furman III in 2005.
She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Vance Pfiester and husband, Carlos of Kerrville; son, Thomas E. "Tom" Bridges Jr. and wife, Laura of Kerrville; granddaughter, Laura Furman Singleton and husband, Greg of Dallas; grandson, James A. Bridges of Kerrville; sister-in-law, Maxine Powell of Ingram; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She worked for 35 years for Ware's Shoe Store as a bookkeeper and continued working for James Ware for another six years when he opened the Added Touch after closing the shoe store.
She was active for many years in the Buck & Bull 4-H Junior Rifle Club; Hill Countrtty District Junior Livestock Association and Kerr County Fair Association and Kerr County Fair Association. She was honored as Grand Marshall of the Fair Association in 1984.
Alta was a charter member of the Pin Princess Women's Bowling League and entered many tournaments (local, state and national) and won many awards. She was also coordinator of the Youth Bowling Association.
She was an avid quilter and donated many handmade quilts to the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Association for their annual fundraiser.
Alta was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kerrville, Texas. She was active in the Senior Games for many years.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Grimes Funeral Chapels.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, officiated by the Rev. Mike Williams. Interments will follow at Glen Rest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Association, the Zion Lutheran Church or to the charity of one's choice.
