ATTORNEY AND GRAPHIC ARTIST

Born in Minneapolis, only child of Judge Edmund Alexander Montgomery and his wife,Louise Easton. Edmund attended local schools and then the "new" Minneapolis Central H.S.He developed interests in both creative writing and drawing. He published his first prize-winning book while still a high school student- creating the book illustrations and then printing finished copies on his own home press. This book was recognized in local literary circles. This early success encouraged Edmund's life-long avocation of drawing, printing and self-publishing.

He entered the University of Minnesota in 1922, graduating with B.A.(Hist.1927)and L.L.B.(Law 1929). He was an active member of Chi Delta Phi and Alpha Tau Omega fraternities--taking great pleasure in producing satires, cartoons and artwork for frat events. He illustrated pieces for both the campus yearbook (The Gopher) and his fraternity's national newspaper. His cartoons & caricatures of fellow students, faculty and staff won him recognition on campus.

But harking to the counsel of his father, Hennepin County District Judge Edmund A. Montgomery, young Ed then turned his energies to the law and his future law practice.Soon he found his soul-mate in very young Harriet Arndt, his legal secretary. They were married in 1939 and moved into the English-style cottage designed by Edmund in then rural St. Louis Park Minnesota.

Edmund was a longtime partner in Minneapolis firm of Richards, Montgomery, Cobb, later Bassford, Hecht, and Lockhart where his specialty was Municipal and Corporate law. He was also City Attorney of St. Louis Park, MN, for more than 20 years. Parallel to his law practice, he continued his drawing and printmaking; his art work won several prizes and was galleried in Chicago, New York and London. He published several booklets and collection series, including one of local historic sites and another of the London Law Courts, another on historic buildings of Carleton College. He was a 50-year member of the Hennepin Co. and Minnesota State Bar Associations, retiring only in 1980.

An avid gardener at the home he himself designed in St. Louis Park, MN, he was President of the Minneapolis Men's Garden Club and known for spending hours in his garden before and after his workday in court. He worked seven days a week during the peak summer season, and specialized in hostas and bush roses.

Edmund was also busy as member, then board officer of the Lafayette Country Club in Minnetonla Beach, MN.

A man of many talents, with an artistic bend that was expressed in the many works he shared.
