Joe was born August 14, 1916 in Colfax County to Joseph T. and Stella (Mastny) Lapacek. He attended rural District 13 and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1933. In August of 1941 he joined the USMC and was a Gunnery Sergeant in the 2nd Airdrome Battalion, serving two and a half years island hopping in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. . He served two hitches in USMC inactive reserves and in 1946 he started farming the farm he was born on. On April 22, 1950 he and Bernice Kimble were married at the Methodist Church in Creighton. They lived on the home place until 2005 when they moved to Schuyler. Joe was a member of the American Legion and Christ United Methodist Church. Joe enjoyed fixing anything that was broken and was always ready to help friends with problems, especially young men struggling to get started in farming. Joe died December 3rd, at the age of 96, at the Golden Living Center in Schuyler where he had been a resident since March of 2012.

Joe is survived by his wife, of 62 years, Bernice of Schuyler; sister-in-law, Doris Lapacek of Omaha; nieces and nephews

He is preceded in death by brothers, Ed, Robert and Leonard Lapacek; sister, Clara McNally.

Funeral lunch will be served at the church following the burial in the Schuyler Cemetery.

STORY OF THE COUPLE ON THE CUPID CANDY CARTON AND STORY OF THEIR LOVE

Bernice worked as a Pharmacist and a representative of the Russell Stovers Company came in and mentioned a project of putting pictures of couples on their Valentine Candy box. Bernice submitted the photo and they were chosen! Quote on the box is, "The Key to Enduring Love: Keep your mouth shut and bring home chocolate. Happy Valentine's Day!" They married in 1950 and on December 3, 2012, Joseph died...the next day Bernice had a heart attack and died on December 4. And their love continues.....
