Born in Lynn, he was graduated in 1925 from Lynn Classical High School, and in 1930 from Dartmouth College. He attended Harvard Law School and was a 1934 graduate of Boston College Law School.
In 1943 he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and served two terms from Lynn and Nahant.
In August, Mr. Butterworth was recognized for his half century as a lawyer by the Massachusetts Bar Assn. He also was a member of the Essex County and the Lynn bar associations.
He was chairman of the board of directors of the Bethany Hill School for deaf and handicapped children.
He also was a founder of the North Shore Chapter of the Dartmouth Club, and was a former delegate to the Republican National Convention.
A summer resident of New Seabury for more than 20 years, he also practiced in Barnstable County. He was a member of the Boston Yacht Club and was a former commodore of the Nahant Dory Club.
He leaves his wife, Elizabeth (Learned); five daughters, Beverly McEntee of Swampscott, Barbara Cleary and Betty Fitzgerald, both of Marblehead, Brenda Palleschi of Swampscott and Martha Bartlett of Plymouth; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery.
