O'NEIL, JOSEPH. — Age, 28 years. Enrolled at New York city, to serve three years, and mustered in as captain, Co. A, 63rd Infantry regiment, August 7, 1861; discharged, March 10, 1862; again mustered in as captain, same company, March 25, 1862; as major, October 25, 1862; mustered out, June 12, 1863.63rd N.Y. Inf.

Company A, on August 7, 1861. Discharged on March 10, 1862; again mustered in as captain, same company, on March 25, 1862. Mustered in as major on October 25, 1862. Wounded in action, seriously, right arm, on December 13, 1862. He was mustered out on June 12, 1863, consolidation. Commissioned captain on December 26, 1861, with rank from August 7, 1861, original. Recommissioned captain on March 25, 1862, with rank from same date, vice himself, resigned. Commissioned major on October 31, 1862, with rank from October 25, 1862, vice R. C. Bentley, promoted. His roster entry makes no mention of Fredericksburg.
Conyngham, pps. 566-567 “Major Joseph O’Neill, a native of Cork, Ireland, organized Company A, and left New York with the regiment as captain of said company; was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, in the arm, from the effect of which he was totally incapable of performing his duty with the regiment; was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps.” The Official Report of Division Commander Winfield S. Hancock is dated December 25, 1862: “Major Joseph O’Neil, a brave officer,commanding
the 63d New York Volunteers, was wounded.” Pension Record: Joseph O’Neil Major He died on January 2, 1867, at New York City. Widow: Filed on August 19, 1867 Minor: Filed on December 12, 1870
