Dorothy Jewell Romero, 87, of Ceres, California, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Dorothy was born in Verona, Missouri.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of 54 years, John M. Romero; daughter, Judy Guenther (Jeff) of Tracy, California; son, John Michael Romero (Sandra) of Reno, Nevada; grandson, John "J.C." Guenther (Nicole); and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Austin.
Preceded in death by her father and mother, Walter and Flossie Henson; two sisters, Virginia Daniels and Wanda Henson; and three brothers, Eugene, Donald, and Vernon Henson all of Monett, Missouri.
Dorothy, fondly known as "Granny" by everyone, lived and worked for the last 54 years alongside husband, John "Poppy".
Granny and Poppy first met at Chris' & Pitt's in Whittier, California, as a waitress and a chef. They were married, later owning Toppers Steak House in Modesto, California for 8 years. They also catered countless events, assisted other owners to get their restaurant open, as well as worked for some of the valley's most famous restaurants.
In 2004, Granny converted to Catholicism and became a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Modesto. She became active in the Vision Impaired Persons Support "VIPS" group as her eye sight deteriorated. VIPS was greatly helpful in improving the quality of her life and providing both the equipment and support that she needed to maintain her independence.
Recitation of the Rosary for Granny will be at 1:30 PM on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 14, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Fr. Mark Wagner will be presiding.
The burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park.
