Carroll is the son of William Mason Smith and Ethel Leah Gentry Smith. He was born in Winfield, Kansas and attended Southwestern University where he was an All-State and All-Missouri Valley selection in football the final two years that he competed.

He was a coach and teacher for 41 years and one of the most notable atheltic figures in El Dorado history. In Marion, he was coach, physical education teacher and vice principal, then came to El Dorado to coach for all high school sports and the football coach at the junior college. Later he moved to Baltimore, MD where he was athletic director and teacher, until his retirement.

He served for five years as the AAU Basketball Guide, director of the national AAU Womens Basketball tournament. He was the president of the Minola-Garden City Rotary Club and secretary and treasurer for the Wanaksink Lake Club of Rock Hill, New York.
