October 11, 1903, he was a son of the late Stewart and Ella Jane (Maple) Hess. A former Carrollton village clerk, he had been a 40-year employee of Norfolk & Western Railroad in Carrollton and Coshocton before his retirement in 1968. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a 50-year member of Carroll Lodge F. & A. M., both of Carrollton.
Surviving are his wife, the former Laura Newell, whom he married in 1933; a son, Daniel L. Hess of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Alfred (Dorothy) Maffett of Carrollton; one step-granddaughter and two step-great-grandchildren. A brother, a sister, a half-brother, and a half-sister preceded him in death. Services were held Wednesday in the Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home at Carrollton with Rev. Charles Horn officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery at Carrollton.
