NELSON, Wis. - Eugene Charles Brunkow, 79, of Nelson died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his loving family at his bedside from complications from a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born Nov. 29, 1930, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Wabasha, Minn., the only son of the late William H. and Margaret A. (Spooner) Brunkow.

Gene attended Deer Creek Elementary School through the eighth grade; he then attended Nelson High School,graduating with the class of 1949. While in high school, Gene earned a letter for playing basketball. Gene was drafted to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954.

On June 15, 1957, Eugene was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Breidung at Durand United Methodist Church in Durand. To this loving union, two children were born. In 1958, Gene began his career with Standard Oil, where he delivered fuel to customers in Nelson, Alma, Pepin, Urne and the Modena area. Gene also drove fuel truck for several years for Baecker Oil. He retired in 1992.

Gene was a charter member of the Nelson Lions Club and a member of the Nelson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6201, serving as commander for 12 years and also served on the Nelson Fire Department and was the chief for nine years. He was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Nelson.

Gene was an avid Minnesota Twins and Green Bay Packers fan. He found great enjoyment hunting and fishing and also woodworking. Gene's greatest enjoyment in his later years was time interacting |with his precious grandchildren.

Gene's family will hold fondly in their hearts the many "giggle sessions" with grandpa. Gene will be dearly missed by his wife of the past 53 years, Marjorie, of Nelson; two children, Cynthia (Kevin) Kosok of Pepin, Wis., and Charles (Tracy) Brunkow of Arkansaw, Wis.; five grandchildren, Kari and Kellie Kosok along with Chase, Cody and Kaci Brunkow; his uncle, Norman "Bud" (Dorothy) Spooner of St. Paul; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Grace Lutheran Church of Nelson.

Burial will follow at Nelson Cemetery with full military honors performed by the Nelson VFW Post. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Talbot Family Funeral Home, Alma Chapel and on Thursday at the church one hour prior to the services.
