Vera Hughey married Vernon Mitchell on May 21, 1939 (only 2 days after her 18th birthday) in Grimes County, the place of their birth. The Finnie Hughey family and the Wiley Mitchell family were Navasota neighbors attending worship services together and visiting often. Vera was the third child and youngest daughter of Finnie Hughey and Ada Nesby Hughey. She is the sister of Estelle, Irene and Henry Hughey. Vera was the devoted mother of their son,James, and worked as a cafeteria manager for the school district. She was also a member of the Woodman of the World.

Those left to treasure her memory are her husband, Vernon Mitchell of Pasadena; son, James Mitchell with wife Glenda of Deer Park; grandchildren, Misty Bonham with husband Michael of Humble and Christy Ham with husband Jarad of La Porte; and great-grandchildren, Madison, Makenzie, and Matthew Bonham and Cody, Tanner, and Laurynn Ham, along with a host of friends and extended family.

Few reach this milestone, but Vera and Vernon were blessed by Almighty God with
74 years 1 month and 20 days together on this earth. It can be said they shared a marriage truly made in Heaven. But as a relative lovingly stated, "their marriage was also made in Navasota." Vera and Vernon's love and devotion to Christ, to each other and to their family was an example witnessed by many. Vera, age 92, quietly left this life from their home with Vernon, age 95, lovingly assuring her that he was there to take care of her. ~~ His voice gave her peace while
her presence gave him purpose.
