Mrs. Calhoun was born September 14, 1924 in Randolph County, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George Traylor Calhoun; parents, Edgar and Ethel Hester Heard; sister, Alice Sanders; and four brothers, Bill, Eliot, John, and Herbert Heard.
George and Sarah were members of Whitesburg Baptist church in Huntsville and former members of Gilliam Springs Baptist Church in Arab. Sarah will be remembered for her mentoring of countless children with the Bible Drills and working with the Girls in Action at Gilliam Springs. George and Sarah were also avid supporters of Arab athletics even after moving to Huntsville.
Sarah was also a seamstress who was noted for designing and creating uniforms for junior and high school cheerleaders, color guards, and majorettes.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Tate (Horace) of Huntsville; four sons, Don Calhoun (Donna) of Birmingham, Chuck Calhoun (Ginger) of Haymarket, Virginia, Marty Calhoun (Linda) of Ocean Springs, MS, and Steve Calhoun of Huntsville; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sister, Louise McDow of Wedowee; and numerous nieces, nephews.
Funeral service will be 3:00p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel with Reverend Ron Lynch officiating. Burial will be in Gilliam Springs Cemetery, Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, directing.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1p.m. to3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel.
