Upton County, Texas Deputy Sheriffs, Arthur Frances Schnaubert, Jr., and Malcom Reimers were involved in a roll over accident around 12:30 a.m. about 4.3 miles northeast of McCamey on King Mountain Road. The deputies had been on a road block after an armed robbery in Odessa, and the deputies began a pursuit of a vehicle they believed to be the robbers. The wrecked vehicle was discovered about 6:30 a.m. Deputy Sheriff Schnaubert was pronounced dead at the scene and Deputy Sheriff Reimers was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Reimers told investigators they were chasing a vehicle when their patrol car went off the road and sideswiped several guard posts, went into a pasture, and overturned three times. Deputy Sheriff Schnaubert had lived in Upton County about 30 years. He was 61 years old at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, two brothers, four sisters and four grandchildren. He was buried in the McCamey Cemetery. His father, Arthur F. Schnaubert, Sr., was the first sheriff in Upton County from 1910 until 1914.
