Patrick Daniel Foster, of Boon, died Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. He was 23 years old.

Patrick was born August 18, 1989, in Cadillac, to Paul Foster and Cindy Flint.

He attended Lake City Schools and was currently enrolled at Northwestern College in Traverse City.

Patrick was a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church and really looked up to Pastor Steve. He enjoyed playing chess, reading, studying the Bible, spending time with his little nephew, Colby, and spending time with friends and family.
He was a kind, gentle, and caring soul, and he will be missed by all.

There are things we must all learn and experience in life, and while there are so many questions we are unable to find easy answers for, part of the living of life is the pursuit of those answers we are each driven to find.

No one can tell a grieving person why their loved one is so suddenly gone one day, never to share again with them the smile and voice which had grown so familiar, the touch and presence which had become such a part of life as to be part of one another.

It is said that lives which burn out quickly do so because they burned so brightly in the brilliance of the love they shared, were consumed too soon because of the warmth they so unselfishly provided to others. Such love comes, ultimately, with a price — a price someone as loving as Patrick would never begrudge or regret paying when it came to the loved ones in his life.

We all carry scars from the demons that each and every one of us faces over the course of life — demons we too often face alone to spare their darkness from those we commit ourselves to providing with the light and warmth of our own burning. Patrick faced his demons, and we must realize his leaving us now is in no way realization of those demons defeating him.

Patrick's flame, the one with which he provided his loved ones with light in the darkness and warmth against the cold, always in spite of the pain he kept his own and the scars he took on, continues to burn. We see it in the good memories he leaves behind, we feel it for just now in his absence — but in time it will return to its true form — warmth to those he leaves behind against the cold demons they face themselves, comfort against the scars they carry, light against the dark.

Patrick is survived by his father and mother, Paul Foster and Cindy Stevens (Ervin Chaffee) of Lake City; sister, Erica (Cody) Stevens of Traverse City; and brothers, Jeffrey Foster of Lake City, and Chris Stevens of Rosebush; grandmothers, Patricia Foster and Joyce Flint of Lake City, and Linda Stevens of Cadillac; grandfather, Jeff Derby of Lake City; aunts, Peggy (David) Phillips of Lake City and Paula Stevens of Cadillac; uncles, Phil (Gloria) Foster of Lake City, and Art Stevens of Cadillac, Chuck (Teri) Flint and Bobby (Kristin) Flint of Lake City; and Andy Flint of Cadillac; nephew, Colby Maxwell of Traverse City. Also by many cousins and friends, particularly James Giles and Eric Weland of Lake City.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Almond Foster and Charles Stevens; grandmother, Katherine Foster; great-grandparents, John and Nonie Hutchinson; and special aunt, Toni Elliott.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Young Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve VanNoort officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the Lake City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
