Civil War Veteran

Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Friday, March 5, 1920:
Henry Schmitt, a Civil War veteran and resident of Edwardsville for half a century died this morning at his home 917 Grand Avenue. The end came at 6:40 o’clock while seated in a chair and was due to an attack of asthma with which he was ailing for a long time.
Mr. Schmitt was able to be up and about during the last few days and arose as usual this morning. There was not the least indication that the end was near until the last breaths came.
Mr. Schmitt was born at Steingelte, Alsace, on March 30, 1843 and was 77 years, 11 months, and 5 days old at the time of death. He came to this country as a boy of 16 years of age and practically of the time has been spent in Edwardsville and vicinity.
For a time as a youth he was employed in the old distillery and later learned the shoemakers trade which he was following when the Civil War began. He entered the service and became a member of the 117th Illinois volunteers. He spent three years in the service.
Returning from the war he followed shoemaking until his health failed and he engaged in farming. A number of years were spent in New Douglas and later in Pin Oak township. He retired about three years ago, moving to Edwardsville.
After the service for his country Mr. Schmitt came back to Edwardsville and on December 26, 1867 was married to Miss Amelia Anschutz. The union was blessed with nine children of whom seven survive. The living children are Mrs. Mary Leightsheo, Old Ripley; Mrs. Magdalena Ohren, Mt. Olive; Henry L. Schmitt, Hamel; William F. Schmitt, Edwardsville; Mrs. Bertha P. Talleur, John M. Schmitt, and Mrs. Louis Bode, Pin Oak.
Mr. Schmitt was a member of the Edwardsville Post No. 416, G.A.R. Members will meet at the Carnegie Library Sunday afternoon to make arrangements for attending the funeral.
Plans for the services were made today, leaving the house at 9:30 o'clock, services being conducted by Rev. E.J. Eckhard at the St. Boniface's Catholic church at 10 o'clock. Burial will be at St. Boniface's Catholic cemetery.
