The son of Samuel and Sophia Vanhorn/Van Horn, James had siblings William, Isaac, Eli, Andrew, Isabell, Austin, and Rhoda. His father was born in Jefferson County,Ohio on 4 July 1801, the son of Isaac and Margaret Ann Van Horn, He was bonded out to a Mr. Bailey in 1810. Samuel married in October 1824, Sophia Minard, a native of Pennsylvania, born on 15 December 1804. The family came to Wood County, Ohio in 1831 in an ox-drawn wagon and immediately settled on 80 acres of wild swamp land. They built a house 16 x 18 feet. For food, the family shot deer, squirrel, and turkey and grew potatoes and corn. James' father died 4 February 1886 and his mother on 4 June 1890. James' sister, Isabell, married John France and his sister, Rhoda married, Henry Blythe. His brother, Andrew, went to Adams County, Indiana.
