Col. John O. Waddell is perhaps the most battle-scarred veteran of Polk. He received five wounds in five distinct battles. At South Mountain, he was wounded in the face; at 2nd Fredericksburg, in the ankle; in the instep at Gettysburg, and in the left radius at Wilderness. On the 16th of August '63 in Virginia he was wounded in the knee. Much as Col. Waddell values his honorable wounds, yet he prized most his efforts to relieve the distresses of disabled Confederate Veterans. In this work he has done much.
(Written by Dr. Charles Keenan Henderson, History of Polk County.)
He was in Co. F of the 20th Georgia.
I also read about this Gallant Soldier, on his Confederate Pension papers. He was very well known, especially after the War, helping aged Confederates.
