Author. He was an American author and essayist noted for his advocacy of environmental issues and criticism of public land policies. His nineteen books include "Desert Solitaire," (regarded by many as one of the finest nature narratives in American literature), "The Monkey Wrench Gang," "Abbey's Road," "Beyond the Wall: Essays from the Outside" and "Cactus Country."
