Porter was the sixth child born to Thomas M, (1822-1897)and Louisa Porter,(1823-1898) Johnson.

He married Mollie Browder Templeton, (1862-1943), daughter of John Wesley, (1820-1889), and Mary Frances Crittenden, (1828-1892), Templeton, on 24 Dec 1885 in Logan Co, KY.

They had four boys and one girl, Wilbur B, Lucian T, Joe (Dewy) Jewel, Joe and Bertha Irene.
