Obituary : Petronella Stiltjes

Petronella Stiltjes, widow of Christ Hermsen, passed away on Thursday night of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna Smets, on N. Superior Street. Mrs. Hermsen had been in failing health for some time and the end was not unexpected. Mrs. Hermsen was born in Cleve, Germany, on Feb. 15, 1843, and was 81 years of age, lacking seven days. Shortly after her marriage to Mr. Hermsen she came to this country and resided here ever since.

Mrs. Hermsen was the mother of eleven children; one died in infancy; her daughter Mary (Jos. Lemay) died four years ago, and six sons and five daughters survive as follows: Mrs. Ann Smet of De Pere, Henry of Green Bay, Undersheriff; Delia (Mrs. Julius Vanden Branden) of Green Bay, Will of Rice Lake, John and Frank of De Pere, Dora (Mrs. Chas. Boehm) of Ashland, Kate (Mrs. Ed. Carter), who is dangerously ill in an Oconto hospital, and Christ of Oconto. Mrs. Hermsen also leaves 47 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hermsen died 31 years ago. The funeral was held from St. Mary's church Monday forenoon, and the esteem in which the decedent had been held was shown by the unusually large attendance. The Alter Society of which she had been a charter member and president and secretary fro over thirty years, attended in a body to pay their last respects to one who had worked so long and so faithfully for their organization. The pallbearers were six grandsons: Walter Hermsen and Al. Vanden Branden of Green Bay, Christ Vanden Branden of Menasha and Christ Lemay, Frank Hermsen and Lester Hermsen, Lloyd Smits of De Pere and Frank Hermsen of Green Bay were ushers. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. Jule Vanden Branden and daughter Agnes, Mrs. Jerry Fencel, Al. Vanden Branden, Mr. And Mrs. Henry Hermsen, Mr. And Mrs. James Coffeen, Wm. Blair, all of Green Bay; Will Hermsen and daughter Lolita of Oconto; Mr. And Mrs. Chas. Boehm of Ashland, Mr. And Mrs. Jack Ritten of Kimberly, Henry Ritten of Menasha and Frank Ritten of Minneapolis, Minn. There were many floral and spiritual bouquets.
