Allen Wickersham, well known citizen of Mt. Union, Justice of the Peace of Washington Township, died at his home, 108 West State Street at 12:15 Wednesday morning following a brief illness from erysipelas. Only Friday afternoon of last week he was taken ill. His age was 71 years.

Mr. Wickersham was born June 23, 1845 at Green Hill, Columbiana County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Wickersham and the early years of his life were passed within that community. In young manhood he became a teacher and for twenty years followed the vocation. Later he took up the farm and for a number of years lived in Augusta Township, Carroll County, near Mt. Union Zion Church, coming there to Mt. Union during the winter of 1888-89, he ever since having resided there.

During his life in Carroll County he served a number of years as Justice of the Peace, and for nine years had served as Justice for Washington Township, Stark County, having but recently entered upon his third term. As an official he was a most careful and efficient man, the cause of right ever being the spirit guiding his official acts and few cases going to a higher tribunal from his court were seldom, if ever, reversed.

He was of Friend's parentage and the tenets of the faith of the fathers were ever his, being a man of unassuming character, sincere in all his work and of the highest integrity and worth. He was ever courteous and affable, a splendid citizen, neighbor and friend, and his death following so quickly upon the news of his illness came as a shock to his many friends.

His wife was Miss Josephine Moore of Carrol County and she with one son, George Francis, at home survive. One daughter died about twenty years ago. Two brothers and two sisters are still living, Philip Wickersham and Bayard Wickersham, both residing in Kansas; Mrs. Phoebe Reeder residing in Iowa and Mrs. Emma Swearingen of East Rochester.

Burial will be made in the Mt. Zion Church Cemetery, Carroll County, four miles from Minerva on the Augusta Road.
