Mrs. Nellie Gillette [Gillett], 82, passed away early Saturday morning in her home at 32 South Center street from old age complications. She had been confined to her bed the past seven months, her health failing soon after the death of her husband Walter A. Gillette.
Before her marriage Mrs. Gillette was Miss Nellie Tomlinson. She was born in Pavilion February 18, 1855, one of two children of George and Marion Tomlinson. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Perry, her father George Tomlinson opening a flour mill here.
She attended Perry Academy and studied at the old Ingraham Institute in LeRoy. A woman of great charm and understanding Mrs. Gillette's life was closely affiliated with the early social life of Perry. Upon her return to Perry she was united in marriage to Walter A. Gillette April 10, 1870. Their entire married life was lived in Perry.
Mrs. Gillette joined the Universalist church in 1870 and during her lifetime was a loyal and faithful worker for its welfare and progress. She was a charter member of the mutual Friends Society.
One daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gillette, Ruth Cheney DeWolf, passing away January 30, 1936. The only surviving near relatives are five grandchildren, Mrs. Clark Sowerby of Perry, John Cheney of Syracuse and the Misses Mary Elizabeth Cheney, Lois and Helen Cheney of Pittsford.
The funeral was largely attended Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the home, her pastor Rev. Lewis R. Lowry officiating, and burial was in the family lot in Hope cemetery.
Among those who attended the last rites from out of town were Mrs. Theron Jackson and Miss Marion Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; Earl Milks, Roy French and Miss Georgiana Smith of Scio; Mrs. Catherine Cheney and Mrs. Darwin Shaw of Rochester; Harold and Peter DeWolf of Pittsford and the three granddaughters, also of Pittsford.
