John Frederick Lewis, 73, passed peacefully from this life Saturday afternoon, October 20, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Peggy; their combined family of two daughters, Renate (Lewis) Fisher and husband, Ed of St. Louis, MO, Donna Luby, husband, Christopher and their children, Michael and Jacqueline of Marlborough, CT; and four sons, John Erik Lewis, wife, Kippy and their children, Erik and Elaina of Kennesaw, GA, Curtis Berkemeier and his son, Kyle of Ballwin, MO, Matthew Berkemeier of Mechanicsville, Va and Christian Berkemeier of Boynton Beach, FL. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Mirandon and her son, Peter of New York City. John was preceded in death by his parents, Irving Frederick Lewis and Marie Von Kiesenwetter Lewis of Glen Rock, New Jersey. John's faith and family were most important to him. John graduated from Brown University in 1961 and had also studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design. He worked as a Sales Engineer and Manufacturer's Agent within the Prefabricated Industrial Construction industry for fifty years. He was proud of and felt honored to have served his country as an Air Force Photo Reconnaissance Officer in Viet Nam. He held a life-long interest in history and in all things aeronautical. After military service, he built many scale-model RC aircraft and maintained membership in Radio Controlled Aircraft clubs in several states. John's slap-stick humor and lively intelligence will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will receive friends 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy, Mechanicsville, where a funeral service will be held at 12 noon Thursday. Those who would attend a Military Honor Guard ceremony later that afternoon are asked to meet at the Amelia Virginia Veterans Cemetery Chapel at 3:00pm. Any who wish to make a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers, may contribute to the Wounded Warriors Project or to The American Cancer Society. Condolences may be posted at www.monaghanfunerals.com.
