Nathan Van Wagenen died at his home in this village on Tuesday night. His age was nearly 74 years. He hd been in failing health for about a year and about ten days ago suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he did not rally or regain consciousness.
He leaves three sons, Eugene and William of this village and Albert of New York and Mrs. Charles Perrine of Brooklyn.
Mr. Van Wagenen was a native of this town, his father, Jonas Van Wagenen being a farmer in what is now the Plutarch neighborhood. There were five sons of whom only one is now living.
The deceased carried on the mercantile business for some years at Plutarch and in 1885 moved to our village, continuing the mercantile business until quite a recent period. For twelve years and until a short time ago he was postmaster. At the time of his death and for a long time previous he had been one of the trustees of the New Paltz Savings bank. In every position he was true to his trust and all his dealings during quarter of a century of active business __ in this village were marked for honesty and integrity. In speech he was careful and prudent to a very noticeable degree.
He was an elder in the Reformed church almost continuously after becoming a resident in our village. He had a rare gift of ready utterance in public prayer and public speech.
As treasurer of the church many years he did a great amount of work and did it cheerfully. At prayer meetings he was constant in attendance and always ready to take a part.
He was superintendent of the Sunday school continuously for fully 25 years and until shortly before his decease, and his work in the Sunday School always was done with his whole heart.
In temperance work Mr. Van Wagenen had the courage to act according to his convictions of duty.
There was never any doubt of his Christian character for it was shown by a consistent life and by all his dealings. Our village and community and especially the church have met with a very great loss.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday. Friends will meet at the house at 1:30; services at the church at 2 o'clock.
