Obituary for John Nelson Horning: The little son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Horning between 8 and 9 years old, died Saturday about 11 o'clock of the flu after less than a week's illness. Funeral arrangements have not been determined on, owing to the absence of relatives. His death cast a gloom over the whole community as he was beloved by all who new him. He will be sadly missed in the home. John Nelson Horning, son of Charles E. and Hazel Horning, was born in Washington county Iowa October 11 1914 and passed away at the home of his parents in Richland Iowa, Saturday March 17, 1923, at the age of 8 years 5 months and 6 days. He leaves to mourn his early death, his parents, two brothers Hal and Charles Junior. Two grand mothers, one grandfather one great grand mother three uncles, four aunts, seventeen cousins. One infant brother preceded him in death in 1911. He was in the third grade or second room of the public school. He was a member of the second primary class of the M.E. Sunday school. He was also a "Herald of The King" in the Kings Herald Missionary society. For a boy of his age he seemed very much interested in religious affairs. In the last few weeks had even been keeping a diary of attendance at all services. The last Sunday before his death, the Sunday school teacher told the class, of the Book of Life where Jesus has the names of all of God's children recorded, and asked the question "How many of you think your name is written in that book?" Little John"s hand was the first one raised. His favorite song seemed to be "Brighten the Corner Where You Are." He sure did brighten the corner where he was. Always thoughtful of others. Of a neighbor boy suffering at the same time, after inquiry, he exclaimed "Forest is better but I am worser." The many friends of the family are in deep sympathy with the bercaved family. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon March 19. The weather was cold and the snow deep, so that the whole procession was made up of bobsleds. At the house Rev. O. J. F..Fix, read the song "Brighten The Cornor Where You Are. "The remainder of this obituary I was unable to read."
