Obituary for Hal Stanley Horning:
ACCIDENT FATAL TO YOUNG LAD OF RICHLAND, IOWA
OLLIE FAMILY INJURED
Many are the Auto Accidents During These Days of Fast and Careless Driving.
RICHLAND BOY KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
Last Wednesday night a joyous crowd of boys and girls of the 7th and 8th grades of Richland accompanied by their teachers and two guest went to the country about three miles north of town and indulged in a weinie roast. All present enjoyed the outing thus far, immensely, to the starting home point when they were south of Frank Greiner place and near the bridge the lights went out on one of the cars when the driver lost his bearings and caused the car to fall from the bridge into the ditch between 12 and 15 feet below with six boys in the car which turned over twice, killing Hal Horning instantly. The back of his head was crushed besides other bruises. Hubert Luman had several ribs broken and Doyle Schmitter suffered a bruised eye and minor injuries which required the attendance of a physician. As soon as they could get the dead boy into the car supported on their laps by Miss Heston and Gilbert Hixton the whole saddened group came into town bringing grief to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horning who only seven months ago buried a nine year old boy and now this one 13 years old was laid to rest Friday afternoon in Highland cemetery. His untimely death is a grief to all who knew him. On the afternoon of his death he was chosen president of his class and also president of the "Weiner Roast Annual Club." Six of his classmates acted as pall bearers. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Fix in the M.E. church attended by the largest crowd that has been seen here at a funeral for many months. The whole community sincerely sympathize with the family. The business closed their doors during the funeral services. The father and mother and a younger brother four years old are the only ones left of the immediate family. But a host of relatives also mourn their loss.
Hal was a nephew of Mrs. A.S. Reynolds of Sigourney.
