Harrison McGinnis was born in or about 1841 in Indiana. He enlisted in the 9th Kansas Cavalry on the same day as his brother, James. They were sons of Ira E. McGinnis, #119683407. The 1885, 1895, and 1905 state census reports in Cherokee County, Kansas, all record his military service during the Civil War. Two of these reports also record that he was a prisoner-of-war at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Harrison was listed on the 1910 census, but his exact death date is unknown at this time.

H. L. McGinnis is in the 1915 state census in Cherokee County, Kansas, at Galena. He is listed with his brother, F. R. McGinnis.
