Kenneth Ralph Hamm died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on December 29, 2004. He was born in rural Rapid City on October 21, 1926, the third child of Ralph Dewey and Ruth (Quick) Hamm.
He attended country schools until the family moved into Rapid City in 1939. He attended Rapid City High School from 1940 until 1944, when he left school to enlist in the US Navy. After service in the Pacific Theatre, he was honorably discharged in 1946. In that same year, he was united in marriage to Delores Anderson of Rapid City.
Kenneth was employed by a distributor of Standard Oil products for some years. Later he was a partner in the Black Hills Propane Company, and delivered fuel throughout the eastern Black Hills area. He retired from that firm in 1984.
Kenneth was a man of many accomplishments. His recreational activities included gold mining and visiting historic sites and spots of geologic interest in the Black Hills. For many years he led a small band, the Western Rhythmaires, which performed at many dances and other social gatherings. Later he was the lead singer for the Circle B Cowboys, who performed at the Circle B Ranch. After severing their relationship with the Circle B Ranch, the Cowboys continued to perform up through the summer of 2004. They sang at the inaugurations of several governors in Pierre, and performed in many other places, including Arizona and Canada. In addition, Kenneth was a faithful member of the choir at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Kenneth is survived by his widow, Delores; one daughter, Janan Hamm of Chelmsford, MA, her husband, George Fitch; and two grandchildren, Adriane and Jill Denneno. He is also survived by three sisters, Maralee Dennis of Rapid City, Alta Thompson of Rapid City, and Jeanette Yahne of Three Rivers, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lyle and Carol Hamm; and one daughter, Julie Hamm Bonner.
Visitation will be at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home on Saturday, January 2, 2005, with a Scripture Wake Service and Rosary.
Mass of Christian burial in celebration of his life, will be offered Monday, January 3, 2005, at the Blessed Sacrament Church with Rev. Kevin Achbach presiding. Interment with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. A memorial has been established.
