Rankin, John Robert:

Promoted from 1Sgt. Wounded at Gettysburg--gunshot upper 1/3 left thigh 2-63, 12th Corps General Field Hospital Gettysburg Pennsylvania, United States Army General Hospital York Pennsylvania; United States Army Convalescent Hospital Patterson Park Baltimore Maryland. Returned to regiment 12-63. Commanded Co A 7 & 8-64; Veteran; Mustered Out 11-4-64 term expired; Died Washington DC 10-15-1910, buried Arlington National Cemetery.

Here are his thoughts after the Battle of Antietam (Sept 62):

Soldiers' thoughts are private property, and were generally kept locked in each individual breast.

All of us at times have thoughts we would not care to have made public, and many good soldiers would feel humiliated to have thoughts laid bare, which passed through their minds in certain ordeals.

How much I would give to be away from here…? It would not be glorious, but it would be more delightful to be out of this business.

My own possible fate is entire foreign to my thoughts, a full realization of the awful possibilities involved in battle . . . possesse[d] me . . . . Thank God! My higher nature has triumphed. It has lifted me out of the mire of self and cowardice.

. . . . at the opening of the battle I did not fully withstand the terrible temptation [to run], and was almost ready to acknowledge the independence of the Southern Confederacy.
