M. H. Fitch was born at Lexington. Ky May 12 1837. He studied law and was admitted to the bar at Cincinnati in 1860. He practiced law until the war broke out. He joined the Wisconsin troops. He took part in 30 skirmishes and battles and also marched with Sherman to the sea. On Oct. 12 1864 he married Alice Rhodes. In 1870 they came to Colorado and settled on a ranch west of Pueblo. They soon had three large ranches on which they pastured sheep. In 1880 they moved to Pueblo.
Mr Fitch was interested in the Stock growers National Bank and was its President for twelve years beginning 1876. In 1876 he was appointed Receiver of the U.S. Land office. He held the position for ten years. He accumulated a valuable library and was the author of five books. He was Commander in the G.A.R. and held high office in the Masonic fraternity. He died April 27 1930 at the age of ninety years.
