The 6th Infantry Regiment, about 1,400 strong, was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861. Its twelve companies were recruited in the counties of Montgomery, Jackson, Autuaga, Lowndes, Russell, Macon, Henry, and Wilson.

At The Wilderness, Rodes' Division, which Battle's Brigade was part of, stopped Union Gen. Warren's advance (May 5-6, 1864), where it lost considerably; it was badly cut up at Spotsylvania where it defended the "Muleshoe" salient.
