John Howe Lackey, Jr. resided at 1164 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Akron, Ohio. He attended Caldwell and Harris Elementary Schools and graduated from North High School. He was married to Carolyn and was the father of one daughter, Ann, who was 4 years old at the time of his death.

He entered military service on 05/08/1939 and was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Bombing Fighting Squadron Four; Commanding Officer.

He was killed on 6 October 1945 on a cross-country flight from Groton, CT to Harrisburg, PA. when his SNJ-5 plane went down during a storm over the Appalachian mountains. At 0905, John, and the Air Combat Intelligence Officer of his Squadron, left Groton for Harrisburg on an authorized contact flight. Skies were overcast with a ceiling at 3000. Upon arriving in the New York area the weather became worse with the ceiling dropping to 2000. After turning due west to Harrisburg the weather worsened again with zero visibility, heavy rain, and a rapidly dropping ceiling. To maintain contact flight, John went into a glide to stay below the ceiling. At approximately 1030, John's plane crashed into Hawk Mountain near Kempton, PA. John's passenger survived the crash and after regaining consciousness, he walked for over an hour to the nearest farmhouse and called for help. John survived thirty months of some of WWII's fiercest South Pacific aerial action while serving aboard the USS Lexington, USS Ticonderoga, and the USS Hancock · Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Buried at Chestnut Hill Cemetery Cuyahoga Falls, OH.
He was thirty-two years old at the time of his death.
