David Earl Calkins resided at 12 Uhler Avenue in Akron, Ohio. He attended Findley Elementary School and Jennings Junior High School. He was the son of Mrs. Geraldine Piper and had one brother, George.

He was a Corporal in the U.S. Marines, Third Battalion, First Marine Division, Service # 2229188.

He died of Wounds on 7 November 1967 following a mortar attack on his position in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam twenty-four days after arriving. His tour of duty began 15 October 1967. Awarded the Purple Heart. Buried at Northlawn Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.
His name appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 29E - Row 039.
He was twenty-one years old at the time of his death.
